Audi pioneered a new market for OLEDs. For the first time as a car display, Audi used Samsung Display’s 5.7-inch rigid OLED as the rear seat remote display for the A8. It will also apply a 7-inch OLED display for its all-new electric Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), the Audi e-tron®. One of its highlights is optional ‘virtual exterior mirrors’ which feature a small side-view camera instead of the existing side mirrors. The driver can view the images captured by the camera in real time through the OLED display.

LG Display is also in the final stage to supply 12.3-inch pOLED for the cluster and CID.

Second quarter WRGB OLED panel shipments in the second quarter totaled 720,000 units, up 19% from last quarter’s 580,000 units.

The market for OLED panel for TVs in 2018 is projected to be US$ 2.18 billion, which is expected to increase by 33% compared to US$ 1.45 billion last year.

 

The cost of manufacturing OLED panels for the second quarter was US$ 432 for 55-inch UHD OLED panels, while the 65-inch and 77-inch OLED panels cost US$ 967 and US$ 1,067 respectively. Only 77-inch panels are expected to be profitable.

According to the ‘2017 Flexible OLED Annual Report’ published by Ubi Research, flexible OLEDs are expected to ship 480 million units in 2019, surpassing 409 million units of rigid OLED shipments. In addition, flexible OLED shipments will grow at a CAGR of 41% starting in 2018, reaching 1,285 million units in 2022 with forecasted revenue of US$ 59.4 billion.
